What Bionic Commando Should Have Been

I loved Bionic Commando on the NES. I adored the Game Boy version. The latest iteration however made me want to take a baseball bat to console. The grappling system was cumbersome and frustrating, and the action lackluster. Thankfully the Swedish crew over at Avalanche Studios has figured out a way to do it right. Behold.

It's A Small World, And That's A Good Thing.

Ever felt like Risk took too long? Yeah, me neither... How about this? Ever played Risk with whiny people with short attention spans who thought that it took to long? Yeah, me too. Well, Small World might be a good comprimse.

The biggest problem that I have had with a lot of the strategy games, is that in the beginning they are just too complicated to explain to casual gamers. The last time I tried to teach someone Race for the Galaxy their head exploded. Have you ever tried to get exploded head out of your carpet? It's not easy. With Small World I can happily report there will be no cranial splatter. The concept is easy and fun, yet still maintain just enough strategy to keep those of us who enjoy that kind of thing happy.

The premise is this. You get to pick one of 14 fantasy races (orcs, elves, vampires, honest politicians, etc) who happen to be trying to settle a very small continent. That mithical race will also be paired (randomly) with one special power that will help you out. You and the other 1-5 people are trying to capture territory by placing 2 tokens +1 for every piece of cardboard that exist on that space. So if the space is empty, put down 2 tokens and you've successfully capture the territory. Is there a mountain token on the space, then it will cost you 3 tokens. Somone else have 2 of their tokens on that space you want? You'll need 4. You get the idea. At the end of your turn, you count the number of territories you own and collect your points.

The strategy comes when you've stretched yourself too thin, and start to run out of tokens. At this point you can put your race into decline, removing all but one token from each territory you own, and flipping the remaining tokens over. But the game isn't over for you. Now you get to choose a new race, to start the process all over again. After 8 complete rounds, the person with the most victory points wins.

This is the short of it, and by no means the long of it. I like this game. I like it in the same way I liked Dominion, Settlers of Catan and Carcassonne. They are quick games to play, easy to explain, but have enough variety and strategy that keep me coming back time and time again.

Anyway, we are indeed back up and running like a poorly maintained car that is on it's way into the garage to be fixed up. In other words, we are moving forward. I wanted to take just a few minutes and let you know what I'd like to include on this site, and maybe get some feedback.

Along with our twice weekly comics, we will also be posting comments about our gaming experiences (video, board, et all), reading experiences, video watching experiences, and anything else we decide should go up. I also hope to be creating some short videos that demo/review boardgames which are a new love of mine.

Too Human, but not very Nordic

-From the pages of the sketchpad-

As an obsessed, item-collecting, compulsive RPG-er, I thought that I'd begin giving my opinion (as if there were not enough out there) on the gaming obsessions of the month. Since my current dietary requirements involve loot n' treasure, I have three games on my plate at the moment; Too Human, Tales of Vesperia, and Disgaea 3.

Today we shall bask in the shallow, jello-filled pool that is Too Human.

-Gameplay-

To begin with, let me just say that if you like the hack and slash looting of Diablo or its ilk, you'll find the game to be of similar breed. You and all of our kind already own this game and as such I have no interest in talking to you. For the rest I can tell you that it's the loot and levels that drives you, and since enemies level as you do that leaves loot.
Oh, but such loot there is to be found.
However that is neither here nor there, the combat engine that drives this game takes a while to get used to, but once you do the battles never get old or too easy. That's all there is to say.
You see, besides the occasional step out into cyberspace (also known as Greenland) there is nothing to this game but fighting. There are NO NPCs to talk to though many will stand around talking about you. All of the quests come in a satisfyingly complex system of runes (Which if you can read runic are humerously mundane) that just translate into killing the enemies you're already killing. The levels can take up to an hour or two to run through, but the hub where the blacksmithing takes blace is brief and uncomplicated.

-Sound and Graphics-

I don't care about sound or music, ask someone else. The graphics are typical XBOX360, pretty and shiny, with assorted atmospheric additions and occasionally gruesome plotlines. Though I would be amiss in not metioning the massive types and styles of armor and weapons. I mean they really outdid themselves folks. Everything looks awesome, even the junk, and it's extremely satisfying to get new stuff just for the looks. I mean come on! This is heaven for nuts like me.
However, for those who are squeemish I should mention that this game involves intestinal nudity.
I wish I was kidding.
Okay, there is no actual nudity, but you'll be screaming for these people to put on their clothes and go see a good viking plastic surgeon. ...and a psychologist.

-Story-

It's Ragnarok Light. (A refreshing blend of ale and mead that won't go to your thighs) If you've read Norse mythology, you've already spoiled it. Not too deep but satisfying like a summer movie.

-To Sum Up-

Rent it, play it, it's not as bad as everyone says. Then wait for the inevitably improved sequel 'Even Human-er'. If you really have an itchin' for grog flavored gaming I just happen to have a copy I'll sell real cheap.
